Sedation of Pediatric Patients RULE §110.17 – CE Curriculum
to Satisfy Recently Mandated Sedation of Pediatric Patients (RULE §110.17)
This hybrid continuing educational program consists of both on-line (8hrs) and class room didactics (8hrs) along with a strong hands on clinical component utilizing high fidelity manikins to simulate 15 cases. Enrollees will observe 7 cases on sedation of pediatric patients and complete 8 hands-on sedation cases as the primary sedation provider utilizing pediatric high-fidelity simulation manikins. All of the cases (15) will be performed and documented under the on-site instruction and direct supervision of a dentist anesthesiologist authorized to administer sedation/anesthesia to pediatric patients.
Pediatric Sedation Management Course Outline:
Pre-anesthetic assessment & evaluation of pediatric patients
Physical evaluation & medical history of pediatric patients
Pediatric anatomical & physiological differences compared to adults
Pediatric respiratory and airway considerations
Pediatric airway management
Pharmacology of sedative & adjunct agents
Pediatric Sedation techniques
Sedation management of pediatric patients
Peri-operative sedation complications & management
Emergency management of pediatric patients
Informed consent, monitoring, records, recovery and discharge criteria
Course Objectives:
Pre-anesthetic patient assessment, physical evaluation, physiology and anatomy of pediatric patients, pharmacology of sedative agents, appropriate pediatric sedation/anesthetic techniques, intra-operative monitoring, perioperative complications, records keeping along with proper recovery and discharge of pediatric patients defined as younger than 13 years of age.
Enrollees will manage and complete 15 cases utilizing high-fidelity patient simulation with the use of computerized manikins that simulate real-life scenarios. All of the cases will be performed and documented under the on-site instruction and direct supervision of a licensed dentist authorized to administer sedation/anesthesia to pediatric patients.
