Abuse & Misuse of Controlled Substances: Prescribing Controlled Substances
This online continuing education program is designed to meet the mandatory CE requirements as required in TSBDE Rule 111.1. This course will satisfy 2 hours of CE credit. Also these CE hours may be applied to CE hour requirements for dentist license renewal. Course curriculum will address the prevalence and dangers of prescription medication misuse and review the new Prescription Monitoring Program and requirements for Texas dentists. This is one component in a statewide effort to help prevent misuse of controlled substances.

Dentists authorized (DEA number) to prescribe controlled substances before September 1, 2020 must complete this educational requirement by September 1, 2021 to satisfy TSBDE rule 111.1. These CE hours may be applied to CE hour requirements for dentist license renewal.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course reviews the essential pharmacokinetics and dynamics that provide a scientific basis for rational analgesia prescribing. Emphasis is placed on issues pertaining to substance misuse and abuse that influence patient management, as well as inter-professional relationships. In addition to discussing opoids, we will cover non-opoid analgesics and glucocorticoids; dependence, tolerance, and addiction; and past and present educational, legal, and professional regulatory prescribing frameworks.
