Description

Course Description

This comprehensive course bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world clinical execution for dental professionals administering nitrous oxide-oxygen sedation. Focusing explicitly on the strict mandates of Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) Rule 110.3, this program covers the complete sedation continuum from preoperative patient screening to active recovery management and emergency preparedness.

Participants will master safe administration and incremental titration techniques to keep patients safely within the limits of minimal sedation while maintaining protective verbal reflexes. Additionally, the curriculum highlights crucial safety safeguards—including nitrous oxide’s behavior in closed air spaces, proper equipment mechanics, meticulous charting, and rapid management protocols for common office emergencies.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • Describe and maintain strict compliance with all requirements of TSBDE Rule 110.3.
  • Evaluate patients accurately using the ASA Physical Status Classification and targeted medical histories.
  • Identify absolute and relative contraindications, with specific focus on closed air spaces and high-risk case profiles (e.g., severe COPD, recent retinal procedures).
  • Demonstrate safe delivery setup, daily equipment checkout, and incremental titration protocols to target patient comfort over maximum concentration.
  • Monitor patients appropriately and continuously throughout sedation using direct visual observation and supplemental pulse oximetry.
  • Describe appropriate monitoring and documentation
  • Recognize and manage common clinical complications, adverse events (such as nausea and vomiting), and acute medical emergencies.
  • Document every parameter of the sedation encounter chronologically to create a legally defensive and complete clinical record.
  • Apply objective discharge criteria safely to confirm a patient has successfully returned to baseline mental and physical status.
